What Is Nakshatra? Birth Stars and Marriage Compatibility

What Is Nakshatra?

In Hindu astrology, the sky is divided not only into 12 zodiac signs (rashis) but also into 27 (or sometimes 28) lunar mansions called nakshatras. The nakshatra is the specific lunar mansion in which the Moon was positioned at the moment of a person's birth. It is sometimes translated as "birth star."

While rashi (moon sign) tells you which broad zodiac sign the Moon occupied, the nakshatra is more precise — each of the 27 nakshatras spans approximately 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac, providing a finer-grained astrological identifier.

The 27 Nakshatras

The 27 nakshatras are:

Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashirsha, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati.

Each nakshatra has a ruling deity, a ruling planet, and associated qualities — a rich astrological system that has been developed and refined over thousands of years.

Nakshatra in Marriage Matching

Nakshatra is central to the most important compatibility factor in the Ashtakoota (eight-factor) matching system used widely in North India: Nadi dosha.

Nadi is a classification of nakshatras into three groups — Adi (first), Madhya (middle), and Antya (last). In Ashtakoota, the bride and groom should have different Nadi classifications, as same-Nadi matches are considered to carry a Nadi dosha — a challenge in the compatibility. Nadi carries 8 points out of 36 in the Ashtakoota system, the highest weight of any single factor.

Additionally, the nakshatra of the groom is compared with the nakshatra of the bride to determine Tara koota (compatibility of birth stars), another of the eight factors.

Nadi Dosha: A Note on Variation

Nadi dosha is one of the most discussed — and debated — aspects of matrimonial astrology. Some families and astrologers consider it a serious concern; others believe that other strong compatibility factors can counterbalance it. Some authorities hold that Nadi dosha does not apply in certain nakshatra combinations or community traditions.

As with other aspects of astrological matching, views differ. If Nadi dosha comes up in a compatibility discussion, consulting a knowledgeable astrologer for a detailed reading — rather than relying on a simple online calculator — is advisable.

Nakshatra as Personal Identity

Beyond marriage matching, the nakshatra is used in many Hindu traditions as a personal spiritual identifier. Naming ceremonies, religious rituals and certain auspicious events may reference the nakshatra. Some families use the nakshatra in the child's naming (the first letter of the name is chosen based on the nakshatra's associated syllables).
