What Is Kundli Matching?

Kundli matching — also called kundali milan, gun milan or horoscope matching — is the practice of comparing the birth charts (kundlis or janam patris) of a prospective bride and groom to assess their astrological compatibility before marriage. It is widely practised across Hindu communities in India and the diaspora.

A kundli (birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of a person's birth, showing the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets across the 12 houses and 12 zodiac signs. Two kundlis can be compared in several ways; the most widely used system in North India is the Ashtakoota (eight-factor) system.

The Ashtakoota System

The Ashtakoota system compares eight specific compatibility factors (koota) derived from the rashi (moon sign) and nakshatra (birth star) of the bride and groom. Each factor carries a certain number of points, totalling 36 points in all.

FactorPointsWhat It Indicates
Varna (1 pt)1Spiritual compatibility
Vashya (2 pts)2Mutual attraction and control
Tara (3 pts)3Birth star compatibility, health
Yoni (4 pts)4Physical and intimate compatibility
Graha Maitri (5 pts)5Mental compatibility, friendship
Gana (6 pts)6Nature and temperament
Bhakoot (7 pts)7Love, family, prosperity
Nadi (8 pts)8Health, progeny

Total: 36 points

The score achieved out of 36 is used as a general guide:

  • 18 or below: Often considered not suitable (varies by astrologer)
  • 18–24: Acceptable
  • 24–32: Good
  • 32–36: Excellent

These ranges are general guidelines; different astrologers and families apply them differently.

Beyond Gun Milan: The Full Kundli Reading

Gun milan (the eight-factor scoring) is the most commonly discussed part of kundli matching, but a thorough astrological assessment goes further:

  • Dosha analysis: Checking for Mangal Dosha, Nadi dosha, and other concerns in each chart
  • 7th house analysis: The 7th house in a birth chart relates to marriage and partnership — its strength and the planets placed in it are examined
  • Overall chart compatibility: The interaction of both charts, including the placement of Venus and Jupiter (significators of love and marriage), is considered

A full kundli reading by a qualified astrologer provides a much richer picture than a simple online gun milan score.

How Much Weight Should Kundli Matching Carry?

This varies enormously between families. For some, a favourable kundli match is a near-requirement for proceeding. For others, it is one consideration alongside personal compatibility, family background and education. Some families in modern urban settings may not consult horoscopes at all.

There is no right or wrong approach here — the tradition of kundli matching is meaningful and respected within Hindu culture. What matters is that both families are clear about how much weight they give it, so there are no surprises during the matching process.
