What Is Rashi? Moon Signs in Hindu Matrimonial Matching
What Is Rashi?
In Hindu astrology (Jyotisha), rashi refers to the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the moment of a person's birth. It is often translated as "moon sign" to distinguish it from the Western astrological concept of a sun sign (which is determined by the position of the Sun, not the Moon).
There are 12 rashis in Hindu astrology, corresponding to the 12 signs of the zodiac:
- Mesh (Aries)
- Vrishabh (Taurus)
- Mithun (Gemini)
- Kark (Cancer)
- Simha (Leo)
- Kanya (Virgo)
- Tula (Libra)
- Vrishchik (Scorpio)
- Dhanu (Sagittarius)
- Makar (Capricorn)
- Kumbh (Aquarius)
- Meen (Pisces)
How Is Rashi Determined?
Rashi is calculated from the birth chart (kundli or janam patri), based on the exact date, time and place of birth. Because the Moon moves relatively quickly through the zodiac (roughly 2.5 days per sign), knowing only the birth date is often not precise enough to determine rashi — the time and place of birth matter.
A Hindu calendar (panchang) can be used to look up the Moon's position at any given time, or a priest or astrologer can calculate it from the birth details.
Rashi in Matrimonial Matching
Rashi plays a significant role in kundli matching (kundali milan) for marriage. One of the most widely used systems for assessing matrimonial compatibility is the Ashtakoota (eight-factor) system, in which the rashi of the bride and groom is used to calculate several of the eight compatibility scores.
A particularly important factor derived from rashi is Bhakoot — one of the eight factors in Ashtakoota, carrying 7 of the total 36 points. Certain rashi combinations in Bhakoot are considered more compatible than others, and some are considered potentially challenging (though views on this vary between astrologers and families).
Rashi is also connected to nakshatra (birth star), which is the other major astrological identifier used in marriage matching.
How Much Weight Should Rashi Matching Carry?
This is a question on which families, priests, astrologers and communities differ significantly. For some families, a favourable rashi match is a necessary condition for proceeding with a match. For others, it is one consideration among many — to be balanced against the personal compatibility, family background, education and values of the potential match.
As with all aspects of matrimonial astrology, how much weight to give rashi matching is ultimately a personal and family decision. What matters is that both families have a shared understanding of how they are approaching this factor before any serious commitment is made.
