Diwali & Kali Puja in Mithila

  • Kali Puja on Diwali night is Mithila’s own emphasis, and one of the clearest markers of the region’s Shakta character.
  • Aripan — rice-paste floor drawing — is a distinctly Maithil ritual art, and Diwali is its most elaborate outing of the year.
  • The lamps are read as a welcome to a returning couple, one of whom is the region’s daughter.
  • Batasha, khaja, thekua, laddu and murki are the Maithil Diwali sweets, mostly made at home.
