Kojagara in Mithila

  • Kojagara as a festival for the newly married groom is specific to Mithila; elsewhere Sharad Purnima has no such focus.
  • Makhan is grown in Mithila’s ponds and wetlands — the region supplies most of India’s crop, and the festival makes it ceremonial.
  • The bhar is a formal statement of regard between two families in the wedding’s first year, and its composition is remembered for decades.
  • It closes the Ashwin cycle that begins with Durga Puja, and opens the Kartik run of Diwali, Chhath and Sama Chakeva.
