Holi Songs

होली · फगुआ

In Mithila, Holi is called Phaguwa — and its signature is not the colour but the singing. Groups move house to house through the morning trading Jogira couplets.

Holi in Mithila

  • The word most Maithils use is Phaguwa, not Holi — and Jogira is its defining sound.
  • Jogira’s improvised couplets are a living Maithili oral form: the melody is inherited, the words are made up in the moment.
  • Malpua holds the place that gujiya holds further west; a Maithil Phaguwa without malpua is incomplete.
  • Applying abir to an elder’s feet before playing colour keeps the day’s licence inside a frame of respect.
