Sama Chakeva Songs
सामा चकेवा
A festival that exists almost nowhere but Mithila — sisters shape clay birds, sing to them for a week, and then send them away with a farewell that sounds exactly like a vidai.

Sama Chakeva in Mithila
- Sama Chakeva is observed in the Maithili-speaking region and very little beyond it. If you meet someone who grew up with it, you have almost certainly met a Maithil.
- The song repertoire is entirely oral and entirely in Maithili, passed from older sisters and aunts to younger girls in the courtyard.
- The festival closes the Kartik cycle that begins with Chhath — Mithila moves from the ghat to the field’s edge within a fortnight.
- The clay-and-bamboo craft, and the painted figures, sit in the same visual world as Madhubani painting.
